i don't know how many of you use ventrilo, but for those of you who do, here's a nice little tip

Ventrilo's Equalizer
(note: not the official name)

what this does is it forces everyone's volume to be on the same level
in other words, when someone sounds really low, you don't have to raise their volume anymore (and vise versa, if they're too loud, you don't have to lower their volume)

no additional program is needed, all you need is a working ventrilo :)

Step 1:

Setup -> SFX -> add Compressor

Image

===============================

Step 2:

Gain is your "Volume," i am currently using 14 (other people i know use 17 or 20)
(YOU CHANGE GAIN TO YOUR LIKING!)

the other settings stay the same:
Attack: 10
Release: 500
Threshold: -30
Ratio: 100
Pre delay: 4

Image

and that's it...

i've used this for a long time, and i've never experienced any problems

i hope you guys find this useful! :)

Excellent information! I'll try it next time I play.

By the way, anyone is welcome on our vent server.

[smilie=goodpost.gif] OMG...seriously, I had no idea about this. I have manually adjusted so many people's volume on vent it's not even funny. (E.g. I accidentally left vent on once, and my headset scared the crap out of me with a loud and booming god-like voice, turned out to be Tuck before a scrim). Thank you very much novice!

[smilie=thankyou.gif] This is awesome. Now I don't need to dynamically adjust my volume to hear some people. *glares at KJB*

I'm considering a new rule. Whenever an HK member is in game, he/she needs to be on vent. Makes me sad no one uses it :(

Well played sir.

Vent messing with Steam's in game mic because of my crappy stock sound card. There seems to be an issue on XP when both programs are monitoring the input simultaneously, causing feedback. There's nothing I can do on my end save purchasing a USB mic. This will be resolved as soon as I get off my ass and order a converter off ebay (which will probably be within a few minutes of this post).

Does anybody know what's the program that lets you use Vent and TS at the same time? I remember my friend mentioning it, but he hasn't been online for over 2 weeks and I been meaning to ask him...

Next time he asks you out, tell him you're washing your hair that night.

(Couldn't resist! Sorry!)

Mumble is so much better. It has a built in capability to connect with TF2, so at the top right of the screen you see everyone's names in mumble and their name lights up when they talk. It also has 3D sound for peoples' voices. It takes the players position on the map and makes it sound like his voice is coming from that direction. It's so damn amazing. Also I'm pretty sure Mumble does this voice equalizing automatically.

Question: How confusing is it to tell if the voice you just heard came from in-game, or came from Vent? Is it just a matter of noticing whether or not the little voice graphic appears?

I've only ever used a third party voice chat app (TeamSpeak) with games that did not have voice built in (Diablo 2, Guild Wars, Hellgate: London)
But then, I've also only played two games that did have voice built in (CS:S, TF2)

My fear is saying the wrong thing through the wrong channel. I try not to be Joe Serious TF2 player, but I do get pissed if/when I give strategy away, which is why I generally don't like all-talk.

It's not too confusing. There will be a distinct noise whenever someone hits the vent key to speak if you leave it on. As well as sometimes the voice sounds louder and clearer (IMO)

However if you run the 2 at the same time, you may get confused. I always when just talking to friends in vent while playing tf2 say "spy" in vent.
